At two in the morning in Aberdeen, a reservoir engineer circles one number in red pen. In seven hours he has to tell a room in Edinburgh whether the North Sea is finished. For every hundred barrels found beneath British waters, around fifty seven are expected to stay down there. So how are British engineers going back for them? From a record sideways well hidden in the Dorset pines at Wytch Farm, to seismic surveys that watch oil move through rock at Forties, borrowed gas at Magnus, the rule that changed the whole basin, thickened water at Captain and the desalination plant at Clair Ridge, here are six British ideas that keep old fields alive, and the price that explains why engineers from Texas to Norway are paying attention.
Ewan Rennie, his office and his meeting are a dramatised reconstruction. The facts, dates and figures about real fields, companies and institutions are sourced (North Sea Transition Authority, BP, Apache, EnQuest, Ithaca Energy, Environment Agency, ECIU, Court of Session, Offshore Energies UK).
