Why Are Blackberries in Australia?
Blackberries (Rubus spp.), particularly the invasive Rubus fruticosus aggregate in Australia, are fast-growing, thorny shrubs that spread aggressively through both vegetative means (root suckers, layering) and seed dispersal. Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) play a key role in spreading blackberries by consuming the ripe fruit and later depositing the seeds through their scat.
How Foxes Spread Blackberries:
1. Consumption of Fruit – Foxes are opportunistic omnivores and readily eat blackberries, especially when other food sources are scarce.
2. Seed Dispersal via Scat – Blackberry seeds pass through the fox’s digestive system largely intact. When the fox moves through the landscape and defecates, the seeds are deposited in new locations.
3. Germination in Disturbed Areas – Foxes often defecate along trails, in disturbed soils, and near water sources—ideal conditions for blackberry seedlings to establish.
Ecological Impact:
• Invasive Spread – This process contributes to the rapid expansion of blackberries, particularly in riparian zones, forest edges, and disturbed lands.
• Habitat Modification – Dense blackberry thickets can outcompete native vegetation, reduce biodiversity, and alter fire regimes.
• Fox Populations & Pest Synergy – Since blackberries provide food and shelter, they can indirectly support fox populations, exacerbating their impact on native wildlife.
