In a small town on the edge of the Australian bush lived a thoughtful boy named Callum. He loved the wide blue skies, the rustle of eucalyptus leaves, and the red earth that stretched far beyond his backyard. Most of all, he loved caring for the land around him.

One summer, the rains did not come. The grass turned brittle, the creek shrank into a ribbon of muddy water, and the garden behind Callum’s house began to fade. The grown-ups spoke in worried tones, and the fields looked tired under the blazing sun.

Callum felt small against the great stretch of dry earth, but he did not feel helpless. Each morning before the sun rose too high, he carried a bucket to the creek and carefully gathered what little water he could. He used it to keep a single young gum tree alive in his yard. Its leaves drooped, but they were still green.

One afternoon, as Callum poured the last of his water onto the thirsty soil, he noticed a kangaroo resting in the thin shade nearby. The animal looked worn from the heat, its powerful tail curled against the dust. Callum paused and gently tipped a little water into a shallow dish. The kangaroo watched quietly before lowering its head to drink.

Day after day, Callum continued his small routine. The gum tree held on. Tiny new leaves began to unfurl, pale and brave. The kangaroo returned often, sometimes with a smaller joey peeking from her pouch. Other neighbors began to notice Callum’s stubborn green tree. Soon, they started watering their own plants, saving kitchen water, and protecting the saplings on their land.

When the rains finally returned, the town looked different. Young trees dotted the yards, and hopeful shoots pushed through the soil. Callum’s gum tree stood taller than before, its roots strong from the struggle.

Callum learned that even when the land seems wide and the problem feels enormous, small, steady care can change the horizon. Like a single tree in dry earth, one determined heart can grow a forest of hope.
