JR East's "Cassiopeia" luxury sleeping train used to operate regular services between Tokyo (Ueno) and Sapporo until discontinued in March 2016 prior to the start of the Hokkaido Shinkansen services.
It was a very popular train with berths often running out within hours (or quicker during holiday seasons) of being released for booking. As there was only one Cassiopeia train it would operate a service to Hokkaido and then return the next night.
The train, classified as E26系 is a 12 car unpowered (except for a generator to provide internal power) and so is locomotive hauled. It was introduced by JR East in 1999 to provide "premium" sleeping car service, including suites.
On the JR East section (Tohoku Main Line) dual voltage EF81s were used (including EF81-80 in this video) but later more powerful EF510-500s were used, including two with silver Cassiopeia livery (these were all subsequently acquired by JR Freight).
The train today is used for special tours and charter trains.
This video shows a special tour train operating from Tokyo Ueno to Morioka, passing Oku station shortly after leaving Ueno being hauled by EF81-80.
