Lichen / Bio-indicator lichens || Lichens shorts Association of Algae ☘️ and Fungi 🍄 / bioindicator of pollution #lichen #shorts #trending
Did you know?? Lichens are the biological indicators of environment because they cannot survive in those areas where SO2 releases for long time.
In a short vacation, when I was in trekking of hillside there were different types of evergreen plants. These plants stems were too much different than that I have seen that the stem of urban's plants. In those stem lichens were growing but in the any kinds of Town's plants I haven't seen it.
This is due to Air pollution. In Town area there is too much air pollution but not in village.
So, Lichens can't grow in such polluted area.
These lichens are association of algae and fungi. Lichens are found in the bark of trees, on rocks and even in the exo-skeleton of animals.
------------------------------------------------------
Different Types of lichens:
1) Crustose lichen: Graphis, Lecanora
2) Foliose lichen: Parmelia, physcia, Peltigera
3) Fruticose lichen: Cladonia, Evernia, Usnea
Lichens are composite organisms formed by a symbiotic relationship between a fungus (mycobiont) and an alga (phycobiont). The fungus provides structure and protection, while the algae produces food through photosynthesis.
☘️ Algae:
Algae, specifically green algae or cyanobacteria(BGA), are the photosynthetic partners. They produce simple sugars through photosynthesis, providing food for the fungal partner.
🍄 Fungi:
The fungal partner, the mycobiont, forms the majority of the lichen's structure (thallus) and provides a stable environment for the algae to thrive. It also helps in nutrient uptake and protection from the environment. And the fungal partner typically occupies the majority of the thallus and produces its own reproductive structures.
***Differentiating the partners:
1. Structure:
The fungal partner builds the overall structure of the lichen thallus, providing a habitat for the algal partner.
2. Nutrition:
The algal partner is photosynthetic and produces food (sugars) through photosynthesis, which the fungal partner then uses. The fungal partner is heterotrophic and relies on the algae for its food.
3. Color:
Algae are generally green or blue-green, while fungi are typically colorless.
4. Reproduction:
Fungi produce their own reproductive structures, like apothecia, while algae primarily contribute to the lichen's overall structure and growth.
5. Dominance:
The fungal partner is generally the dominant partner in a lichen, providing the lichen with most of its characteristics.
