Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara hold the world record partnership for the highest ever partnership in Test cricket history. This record-breaking partnership took place during the first Test match between Sri Lanka and South Africa in Colombo in 2006.

The Sri Lankan pair put on an incredible partnership of 624 runs for the third wicket, which surpassed the previous record of 576 runs set by Len Hutton and Cyril Washbrook for England against Australia in 1958. The partnership lasted for over 10 hours, with both batsmen scoring double centuries. Mahela Jayawardene scored 374 runs, while Kumar Sangakkara scored 287 runs.

This partnership helped Sri Lanka to post a mammoth total of 756 runs for the loss of five wickets in their first innings, which was the one of highest total in Test cricket history at the time. South Africa were bowled out for 169 and 434 in their two innings, and Sri Lanka won the match by an innings and 153 runs.

Jayawardene and Sangakkara's partnership remains the highest-ever partnership in Test cricket history and is widely regarded as one of the greatest batting performances in the history of the game.
