Chile’s president-elect Jose Antonio Kast on Monday expressed support for the U.S. military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, calling it positive news that a leader he described as a dictator had been arrested.
Speaking after being formally proclaimed president-elect, Kast said Venezuela’s political transition should involve opposition figures Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez, urging the international community to pursue a swift and dignified solution.
Kast argued that organized crime, drug trafficking and human trafficking linked to Venezuela have affected multiple countries across South America, including Chile and its neighbors. His remarks come as he prepares to take office in March.
