Nithyasree Mahadevan (born August 25, 1973), also known earlier as S. Nithyasree, was born to Lalitha Sivakumar and I. Sivakumar. Her paternal grandmother was the legendary Carnatic vocalist D. K. Pattammal, while her maternal grandfather was the famous mridangam maestro Palghat Mani Iyer, and her granduncle was the noted Carnatic vocalist D. K. Jayaraman. Her mother, Lalitha Sivakumar, was her first guru, and she later became a disciple of D. K. Pattammal, often accompanying her in concerts. Her father, an accomplished mridangist and disciple of Palghat Mani Iyer, strongly supported her musical career. Following the tradition of her family, Nithyashree has continued to sing and popularise the compositions of Papanasam Sivan and has also promoted the works of Gopalakrishna Bharathi through lectures and performances. She entered playback singing when A. R. Rahman invited her to sing the song Kannodu Kaanbadellam in the film Jeans, starring Aishwarya Rai. Nithyasree Mahadevan has performed in major sabhas across India and abroad and has received many awards and titles for her contributions to Carnatic music.

Thyagaraja is pouring out his anguish to Rama. He asks again and again “Enduku?” (Why?) Why does Rama delay in granting him grace and liberation, despite being merciful, despite seeing his struggles with worldly life, despite being the eternal protector of devotees?

Meaning:
O Lord Sri Rama, why do you not show mercy upon me?
Have you forgotten me, thinking I am just part of the crowd, or are you not here at all?
By associating (even unknowingly) with those who constantly revel in base sense pleasures, O Lord Srirama, my body has withered away to half its being. O Lotus-petal-eyed One,O Pure and spotless One.
Helplessly enduring the assault of the shoreless ocean of worldly existence, and tossed in fear like a drop of water upon a lotus leaf, O Lord whose form shines like a rain cloud, O incomparable Hero, why does compassion not arise in you even after seeing me thus.
Why this delay? This is no time for hesitation. If you remain thus, O Lord Srirama, tell me what will become of me? O Lord! I have no refuge but you, O protector of the helpless. O Lord praised by Tyagaraja, whose sacred deeds carry one across the ocean of worldly life, why does compassion not arise in you?
