Darbar is honoured to premiere this fantastic recital: "Abode of Peace” - a synthesis of concepts and soundscapes coming together to create an immersive aural experience for the mind and body. Blending Indian ragas, minimalism and Impressionist piano music, Jesse Bannister performs his own composition, which is made up of the characteristic phrases of Raag Hamsadhwani, flavoured subtly with the essence of Kalyan thaat.

A touching and ambient number, Abode of Peace is performed by Bannister on a 19th century Steinway Model. The piano strings have been specially re-tuned to conform to the microtones of Indian classical music system and create sustaining notes.
Bannister was inspired by the well-researched power of the Indian classical shruti tuning system, where the resonance of these pitches have been known to heal and spark meditative states. “I wanted to explore sound, silence and the resonating space in between on a re-tuned piano set to these incredible pitches and take listeners on a musical journey to grow, bloom and expand through sound – and ultimately experience a tuning of mind and body,” says the UK-based performer and composer.
Indian classical music is based on 22 shrutis (microtones) that make up the large family of Indian ragas. Shrutis enable ragas to invoke emotions and moods on the human mind, body and spirit. Shrutis are the varying sound frequencies that exist between the pure notes of an octave consisting of seven notes.
This piece is part of Bannister’s recent album, “In Tune,” that also draws from his experience of growing up in a family that practices healing through sound.
This video was recorded in a 19th century building in Ashwood, Leeds, “Abode of Peace” is an apt title for this short piece that creates a lasting effect on the mind, infusing a bright yet sobering stillness within.
ABOUT THE MUSICIAN:
Jesse Bannister is a unique musician and is among the world’s leading Indian saxophonists. Jesse has an Indian Mother who is half Tamil, half Goan. He was raised by his British Father in Tottenham, London where he became part of the West Indian community. Having seen Ravi Shankar in 1987, aged 15, on TV on Network East on a Tuesday at 2am (in the morning!), Jesse had the urge to play Indian music. He bought himself a cheap sax and taught himself, until in 1991 he met Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, his first Indian music teacher. Jesse has also learnt form Maestros Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra and from Pandit K. Sridhar.
As a composer he has worked and composed for The Liverpool Philharmonic, The City of London Sinfonia and The Halle Orchestra. Bannister is a leading light in cross cultural music work.
Bannister has built a strong reputation as a performer, producer, composer and educator, sustaining a unique and progressive career over 4 decades. He has pushed the boundaries of traditional and contemporary forms and left a legacy of knowledge with his students, that include many national award winners.
