INTRODUCTORY NOTES By Stephen Bulla

Great Things Happen When Trombone Players Get Together! On This Occasion Six Individuals, All From Different Backgrounds, Came Together With Two Principal Interests In Common: (1) All Play The Trombone, And (2) Are All Active Members Of The Salvation Army In The USA Southern Territory. All Six Found Themselves Crossing Paths As Performers And Instructors At Various Salvation Army Summer Music Schools And Other Annual Events, And On Those Occasions, An After Hours Trombone Group Would Often Form And Play Whatever Music Was Available. These Impromptu Groups Ranged In Size From Simple Duos To Large Choirs Playing Hymn Tunes Or Chorales For Evening Vesper Services. These Spontaneous Ensembles Planted The Seeds For This Recording.

After Some Of The Group Being Featured At London’s Royal Albert Hall During A U.K Tour By The USA Southern Territories Band, There Came A Suggestion About Doing A Full Length Recording, Featuring Some Of The ‘Army’s Own’ In Specially Written Arrangements For Trombone Ensemble. This Would Be An Opportunity To Showcase The Group’s Virtuoso Technique And Feature The UniqueTalents Of Jazz Trombone Soloists Like Herb Bruce And Eric Alexander

After Being Asked To produce This Recording, And With Being A Trombonist And Record Collector….My First Thoughts Went Back To Several Old Landmark Recordings Such As ’Tutti’s Trombone’s’ And ’Trombones Incorporated’ Which Were ‘THE’ Standard For Ensemble Performance. For This Reason Bill Broughton And I Chose To Write The Arrangements For The Same Instrumentation Of Four Tenor Trombones, Two Bass Trombones And Rhythm. We Even Used Many Of The Same ‘Classic’ Neuman Tube Microphones To Get The Same Recorded Sound Of Our Predecessors. Perhaps This Project Will Start The Resurgence Of Interest In Trombone Ensemble Recordings….We Hope So, And We Hope There Will Be A Volume Two! - Steve Bulla
