There are all kinds of coin-operated machines, from claw machines, to vending machines and more. But now there’s one more out there: the helmet cleaner. Scooters are ubiquitous in Taiwan. Add to that the hot and muggy weather and frequent rain, and entrepreneurs could all but smell a business opportunity. One such team came up a tool that can disinfect and deodorize helmets. They’re installed at markets around Taiwan, but are proving even more popular abroad.
When people take off their helmet, they often leave it hanging outside their scooter in the sun and wind. Scooters are the top transport choice in Taiwan, meaning that helmets are a must-have accessory. Drivers may wash their heads every day, but what about their helmets?
It’s not an exaggeration! Some people have never washed their helmets. Taiwan has hot and muggy weather with rain all year round. If you don’t wash your helmet, your scalp might suffer.

If you never wash your helmet, you’ll get more dandruff. As for bacteria, common types such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus can inflame hair follicles, which can cause a rash on the entire scalp. It’s relatively common.
Seeing the need for hygiene, a team of entrepreneurs smelled opportunity. They developed a helmet cleaner, able to do the job in only eight minutes.

All our relatives who live around here in New Taipei drive motorbikes. They’ll wear each other’s helmets. But they’ll say it’s uncomfortable. That it’s too smelly. So we invented this machine for the Taiwanese market.
The machine fills with smoke and emits ultraviolet light, claiming to disinfect and deodorize. The developer has installed them in markets around Taiwan, more than 400 in all.

Currently, only 10% of our revenue comes from Taiwan. We mostly sell in Southeast Asia, like Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, and even India. Now we’ve started selling to Europe and the Americas. Anywhere that has bikers and cyclists.
A small team of only about a dozen people has managed to develop a low-cost machine with high profit margins. Expanding outside Taiwan, it also helps the world see the ingenuity of Taiwan’s entrepreneurs.
