This is a documentary about Brian Mansky's Journey to "Hell & Back", as he ran 135 miles from Badwater Basin to the Mount Whitney Portal. Brian struggled with dehydration, upset stomach and heat exhaustion, but persevered to finish the race. The documentary covers his training trip to Badwater where he ran portions of the course to get an idea of the daunting task ahead of him. It relates the journey the crew went through fighting the heat to keep Brian running. Watching this will give future runners and crews ideas of the struggles ahead and should help them to plan for issues and problems they may face. The course is hostile, rugged and difficult, but at the same time beauty is found in the one of the most amazing places in North America. The Badwater 135 is known as "The World's Toughest Footrace" and endurance runners are familar with famous names along the route: Badwater Basin, Death Valley, Stovepipe Wells, Town Pass, Panamint Springs, Lone Pine and of course Mt Whitney. Every runner must travel past, or through all of these landmarks as they run from Badwater Basin, Death Valley's lowest point (Badwater Basin, 282 ft below sea level) to Whitney Portal (8,360 ft elevation). The race is held in July to make the race even more difficult with daytime temperatures getting as high as 125+ degrees.
It is our goal to help other runners and crew get to the finish line, by providing an insight into the journey ahead. If you are watching this, but have no idea what endurance racing is about, we hope you watch and are amazed at what the human spirit is capable. Either way, sit back and enjoy Brian's journey.
