In southwest Madagascar’s Bay of Ranobe, a quiet revolution is taking place beneath the waves.
These scenes show divers and community members seeding the reef using ARMS — Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures — small, layered artificial reefs that mimic the complexity of natural coral formations.
Each ARMS unit acts as a mini habitat, attracting coral larvae, algae, invertebrates, and reef fish. Over time, they become living, breathing samples of reef life, helping scientists measure biodiversity and resilience in a changing ocean.
In the ARMS Restore Project, led by the Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS) in partnership with ReefDoctor, IHSM, and Coralive, hundreds of these structures are being seeded across degraded reefs in the Bay of Ranobe. Once matured, these thriving ARMS are relocated and integrated into larger reef spurs — restoring lost habitat, rebuilding fish populations, and offering hope for the future of coral reefs in Madagascar.
