Gender is everywhere in our images of wars and conflicts – from soldiers to civilian casualties. Off-hand statements about what men do in wars and what women do in wars frequently appear in media, in official statements, and even our personal discourses about war and conflict. Yet looking at war and searching for gender finds much more complexity – questions of agency, violence, and even the nature of conflict itself. In this talk, Laura Sjoberg argues that the relationship between gender and war is fundamental – that one cannot think of one without the other – and multi-faceted, and provides an introduction to questions asked about conflict through gender lenses.
Laura Sjoberg is British Academy Global Professor of Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College and Director of the Gender Institute. She specializes in gender, international relations, and international security, with work on war theory and women’s political violence. Her work has been published in more than four dozen journals of politics, international relations, gender studies, geography, and law. She is author or editor of fifteen books, including, most recently, with Jessica Peet, Gender and Civilian Victimization (Routledge, 2019) and with J. Samuel Barkin, International Relations' Last Synthesis (Oxford, 2019).
Dr Claire Gobbi Daunton, Chair of the Bedford Society, introduces Dr Sjoberg. (The lecture begins at 3:05 minutes in and the sound is higher quality than the introduction).
