✔️ The history of the Discovery:

The Sitakot Buddhist Monastery was discovered in 1983 with archeological excavations at the initiative of Mr. Abul Kalam Mohammad Zakaria with the financial support of the District Council and technical assistance of the Department of Archeology. Later excavations were also carried out in this monastery in 1982-1983.

✔️ Details:

The architecture is almost square in plan (65.23 m east-west and 74.11 m north-south). The north and south arms of the monastery were projected outwards. The wide frontage arch complex is located in the middle of the north arm. On the north side of the eastern arm, there was a supplementary entrance through the rear wall.
The monastery had 41 rooms, six on the north arm and 11 on the other three arms. The rooms were approximately equilateral (3.8 m × 3.35 m). The back walls of the rooms had niches and the rooms were divided by walls. The thickness of the dividing wall was 0.91 m to 1.22 m and the thickness of the rear wall was 2.59 m, but the thickness of the front wall was 1.08 m
and the inside of the monastery was an internal stretched verandah 2.59 m wide. The rooms of the monastery were connected to the inner drawn verandah by a door 1.8 m long and 1.08 m wide. A wall 1.22 m thick and 0.6 m high covered the entire verandah from the courtyard. The central chambers on the east, west, and south sides of Bihar were larger in size than the other chambers. Each central room had a brick altar. Worship idols were kept there. Most likely the central room on the south side was the main temple. The pavilion with pillars in front of the main temple will be used as a mandapa.


✔️ Bihar Period 🕙
Although there is talk of two construction periods in the construction of Bihar, the period of Bihar has not been fixed in the stratification system. [1] Later, however, it was proved that the monastery was built in the 5th-6th century AD, about one and a half thousand years ago.


✔️ Artifacts recovered
A bronze Bodhisattva Padmapani and a Bodhisattva Manjushri idol are important artifacts from Sitakot Bihar. From the structure of the two statues, it can be inferred that they were made in the 7th-8th century. [1] Most of the antiquities of this monastery are preserved in the Dinajpur Museum.

✔️ সীতাকোট বৌদ্ধবিহার সম্পর্কে অজানা কিছু তথ্যঃ

জনাব আবুল কালাম মোহাম্মদ যাকারিয়া এর উদ্যোগে জেলা পরিষদের অর্থায়নে ও প্রত্যন্ত বিভাগের কারিগরি সহায়তায় ১৯৬৮ খ্রিস্টাব্দে প্রত্নতাত্ত্বিক খননের আবিষ্কৃত হয়েছিল সীতাকোট বৌদ্ধবিহার।
পরবর্তীতে ১৯৭২-১৯৭৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দ খনন চালানো হয়েছিল এই বিহারে।

বিহারটিতে ৪১টি কক্ষ ছিল, উত্তর বাহুতে ৮টি এবং অন্য তিন বাহুতে ১১ টি করে। কক্ষগুলি ছিল প্রায় সমায়তনের (৩.৬৬ মিটার×৩.৩৫ মিটার)। কক্ষগুলির পেছনের দেয়ালে কুলুঙ্গি ছিলো এবং কক্ষগুলি দেওয়াল দ্বারা বিভক্ত ছিলো। বিভাজক দেয়ালের পুরুত্ব ছিলো ০.৯১ মিটার থেকে ১.২২ মিটার এবং পেছনের দেয়ালের পুরুত্ব ছিলো ২.৫৯ মিটার, কিন্তু সম্মুখের দেয়ালের পুরুত্ব ছিলো ১.০৭ মিটার


✔️ ঐতিহাসিক সীতাকোট বিহারের সময়কালঃ

বিহার নির্মাণ সম্পর্কে দুটি নির্মাণ কালের কথা বলা হলো স্তরবিন্যাস পদ্ধতিতে বিহারের কাল নির্ধারণ করা হয়নি। অবশ্য, পরে বিহারের যে খ্রিস্টীয় পঞ্চম- ষষ্ঠ শতকের, অর্থাৎ প্রায় দেড় হাজার বছর আগে নির্মাণ হয়েছিল তার প্রমাণ করা গেছে।

✔️উদ্ধারকৃত প্রত্নসামগ্রীঃ

ব্রোঞ্জনির্মিত একটি বোধিসত্ত্ব পদ্মাপাণি এবং বোধিসত্ত্ব মঞ্জুশ্রী মূর্তি সীতাকোট বিহার থেকে প্রাপ্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রত্ননিদর্শন। মূর্তি দুটির গঠনশৈলী থেকে অনুমান করা যায়, এগুলি ৭ম-৮ম শতাব্দীতে তৈরি।[১] এই বিহারের অধিকাংশ প্রত্নসামগ্রী সংরক্ষিত আছে দিনাজপুর মিউজিয়ামে ।
