Songs by famous bands will often relocate popular open position chords. In this lesson, I’m going to give you an easy chord trick based on the open position “Am” chord. What I’m about to show you is used by all of the world’s famous bands in hundreds of songs played in more ways than we could count.

To help take this open position relocating technique into a brand new place within your guitar style, I’ll begin the lesson with the most basic way this trick is used. Then, I’ll take the idea to another level showing you other chord options. The other options will add Suspended and Extended chords into the mix.

With different neck pattern options for the common chord of open position “Am,” we have an instant opportunity to hear a fresh harmony. This is important (especially in song-writing), and it is exactly why this lesson will focus on taking the sound of open “Am” into two different playing directions.

First, I will show you how the “Am” can move up the neck allowing new shapes to be played under the open “A” 5th string. Then, I’ll show you how adding a simple trick of including open 2nd string “B” can include the sound of both “Suspended” and “Extended” chord harmony.

Start by learning the new positions of open “Am,” and develop their association along the fingerboard. Then, replace any chord tone located on the 2nd string with the open 2nd string “B.” Use the practice routine to master each pattern.
