Trethevy Quoit is a remarkably well-preserved Neolithic portal dolmen (circa 3500–2500 BC) located near St Cleer, Cornwall, known as "The Giant's House". It consists of five standing granite slabs, including a massive 20-tonne capstone, reaching 2.7 metres high. It is managed by the Cornwall Heritage Trust.
Key Details and Features
Structure: This "portal dolmen" served as a communal burial chamber, featuring a small antechamber and a chamber formed by large overlapping granite slabs.
The Capstone: The huge, tilted capstone features a unique, small, man-made hole in its highest eastern corner.
Location: Situated on a low hill near Darite, it overlooks the River Seaton valley.
Condition: It is considered one of the best-preserved, most impressive, and "most complete" megalithic structures in Britain.
Access: It is free to visit, with limited parking available near the site.
Originally part of a larger, now-eroded cairn or mound, it is a significant example of prehistoric, Neolithic-era engineering.
