One for the great Bruce Foxton's birthday on 1 September, Down In The Tube Station At Midnight. I'm no bass guitarist - but it's some comfort to learn that neither was Bruce at first. He was second guitarist in the 4-piece The Jam, with Paul Weller on bass. It took the departure of Steve Brookes in 1975, and some failed auditions for a replacement guitarist, for them to settle on the 3-piece line-up we all know, with Paul Weller encouraging Bruce to play bass while he took on the lead guitar. And the rest is history.
Playing the riff as close as I can work it out from the single on a 1974 Rickenbacker 4001 in Jetglo - as near as dammit to the 1973 4001 that Bruce played. And all that toppy attack! Absolutely killer bass!
