This video reflects on Section 26 of the Diamond Sutra, “The Dharma Body Is Not Form,”
gently examining why the external appearances, forms, and characteristics we so often cling to can never serve as the true measure of awakening.
Through a dialogue with Subhūti, the Buddha makes it clear that if the Tathāgata were to be judged solely by the thirty-two physical marks, then even a Wheel-Turning King would have to be regarded as a Buddha. To seek awakening through visible form or audible sound, he warns, is not the path to enlightenment but a deviation from it.
In the latter part of the video, the well-known encounter between Emperor Wu of Liang and Bodhidharma is revisited. This episode reveals why outwardly impressive merits, calculable acts of giving, and practices driven by the expectation of reward cannot be called true merit. Bodhidharma’s declaration that there was “no merit” was not a denial of value, but a direct pointing to the truth of non-form and non-attainment.
This video quietly asks a fundamental question:
when we let go of everything that can be seen, heard, or conceptually grasped, what remains of the Buddha?
Beyond form
Beyond sound
Beyond concepts
It invites us to reflect, here and now, on how we are truly seeking the Buddha.
