In 1971, on the concrete stairs of Cleveland Gardens, Birkenhead, eight-year-old Meep (wild auburn curls, dimpled chin) let an unsavoury friend whisper poison in his ear about his true love Joan.
When Joan, also eight (short blonde curls, face of an angel), came skipping toward them, smiling like the sun, Meep looked her in the eyes and repeated the words he’d been fed:
“I don’t want to see you anymore.”

He didn’t know those nine words would be the last unkind thing she ever heard from someone who once loved her – and would always love her.
He didn’t know that rejecting his true friend Joan would be the first domino in a chain that ended, years later, in needles, streets, and silence – because an eight-year-old Meep could not yet foresee that, had he stayed by her side, he might have been there in 1983 to protect her from the dangers waiting for them both.
If only.

For fifty-four years Meep has carried one single, endless question:
“If I’d told that unsavoury friend to piss off…
if I’d taken her hand instead of breaking her heart…
would Joan still be alive?”

Every dream where she returned – always the same girl, always exactly his age at the time – felt like her ghost asking the very same thing.

This song is the apology he never got to give while she was still breathing.
This is eight-year-old Meep, fifty-four years older, finally climbing those same stairs, voice shaking, saying:
“I’m sorry, Joan. I should have protected you. I should have been braver.”

And this is Joan – forever the age she was when everything went wrong – turning at the top of a celestial staircase, smiling through fireflies, and answering:
“Let it go, Meep. It was never your fault . Just live the life I didn’t get.”

Scouse whispers, Merseyside tears, bagpipes made of regret and mercy, penny-whistle forgiveness.

Joan didn’t die because of nine words from an eight-year-old boy.
But Meep spent half a century believing she did.

This is him finally laying that belief down.
