Abstract:
5G has ushered in a new technological revolution, which is a major paradigm shift from the previous generations of mobile network architectures. It has spurned new business ideas and enabled new use cases that were either not possible or perceivable with the previous G’s. At the heart of 5G is Network Function Virtualization (NFV), which is one of the key technology enablers of not only 5G but will continue to play a central role in the coming generational evolutions.
In this regard, ETSI NFV Industry specification group (ISG) has been formed to standardize the NFV management and orchestration (MANO) system, its interfaces and operations enabling a variety of technical features, and interoperability with external management systems.
In this context, this talk will give an overview of the latest progress being made in the development of the NFV MANO system for supporting and enabling a variety of features such as 5GNFV, Network Slicing, multi-site connectivity services, Cloud-Native VNFs and Container Infrastructure management, to name a few. Also some insights will be provided in terms of the adoption of ETSI NFV standards by open source projects like OpenStack, ONAP, OSM and the scope of ETSI NFV’s liaisons with other SDOs like 3GPP, ETSI MEC, ETSI ZSM, etc. Based on this, thoughts will be shared as to how the development in NFV is going beyond 5G use cases, and how it is evolving and paving way to take over challenges posed by the next wave of 6G.
Short Bio:
Dr. Faqir Zarrar Yousaf is a Senior Researcher at NEC Laboratories Europe in Heidelberg, German, with over 20 years of experience in the area of telecommunication and data networks. His current research focus is on NFV/SDN related technologies in the context of 5G & beyond network architecture and operations. He is serving as the Chairman of the Solutions (SOL) working group in ETSI ISG NFV, and is a Rapporteur of multiple wok items. He was awarded NEC’s standardization “Fresh Player” award in 2015 for outstanding work in ETSI NFV. Dr. Yousaf has extensive experience in the design development, modelling, simulation and prototyping of novel protocols, algorithms and system methods for optimizing network performance. He has nine granted patents, while his research work has been published in several peer reviewed international journals, conferences, and book chapters.
