Classification of Epithelial Cells & Where they are found in the body:
Simple: 1 layer
Stratified: more than 1 layer

Simple Squamous:
Endothelium - epithelium of the cardiovascular system including Capillaries
Mesothelium - epithelium of body cavities
Alveloli & Glomerulus
Useful for Diffusion

Simple Cuboidal:
Around the secretory portion of glands
Small ducts
PCT of Nephrons - Combine with Microvilli
Germinal Epithelium
Absorption & Secretion

Simple Columnar:
GI Tract + Microvilli
Absrorpotion
Female Repro + Cilia
Transport

Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium
All cells touch the BM but not all reach the surface
goblet cells
Resp & Male Repro
Combined with Cilia and Stereocilia
Useful in absorption and transport

Stratified - named after the top layer, bottom layer for regeneration, lies on BM

Stratified Squamous:
Keratinised
Keratin protein
Skin
Protection + Barrier

Non Keratinised
MMM
Protection + Lubrication
Upper GI + Anal Canal, Vagina, Cornea

Stratified Cuboidal/Columnar:
Large Exocrine Ducts

Transitional Epithelium
Urinary Tract
Osmotic Barrier
Uroplakin protein results in plaque formation
Cuboidal (relaxed) --- Squamous (stretched)
Change in shape + number of layers
Umbrella cells, Binucleate
