Video Description
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since the launch of various tracker products from companies like Apple, Tile eufy, and others, we have seen a rise in them being used to harass and stalk other people.
While they have also been used for good, like monitoring where your lost airplane luggage is at.
They have also been used for negative things as well.
It's gotten to the point where we need to know if we're being tracked for our personal safety.
This is where Android's new Unknown Tracker Alert feature comes into play. Google is currently rolling out this feature to all devices running Android 6.0 and higher, although it could take a few weeks for it to finally land on your smartphone or tablet.
I noticed that my Google Pixel 7 Pro with Android 14 beta installed on it does not have this feature yet.
But my POCO F2 Pro daily driver running LineageOS already has it.
There doesn't seem to be a way to manually add this feature to your device. So you'll have to wait until Google sends it out to you.
You can check to see if you have it by opening up the Settings application.
Then tapping on the Safety & Emergency option.
And now look for the Unknown Tracker Alerts feature down here toward the bottom.
Once the feature has been rolled out to your device, it should be enabled by default.
But again, you can go to this menu of the Settings application and check to see if it's turned on.
You can even choose to disable it with a simple tap of this toggle here.
While enabled, the alert notifications should come in automatically.
Which will happen when Android detects that a tracker has been separated from its owner AND is suspected to be traveling with you.
Tapping the notification will reveal more information about the tracker and allow you to view a map of where the tracker was seen to be traveling with you.
There will also be a Play Sound option from there that allows you to enable and audible noise when a tracker has been detected by your smartphone.
If you're able to find out where the tracker is located, most smartphones will allow you to tap the tracker to the back of the device to get some details about it. Including the serial number and some information about the owner. Such as the last 4 digits of their phone number.
Google also provides a help page for those who have found an unknown tracker device and want to learn how to manually disable its tracking feature.
I'll be sure to link to that support page down in the video description below.
The last thing I wanted to point out with this new Unknown Tracker Alert feature is that you can use it to manually scan the area around you.
This is great for those who just want to check your surroundings to see if there is a tracker laying your location.
Again, this will require the tracker to be separated from the owner for it to show up in the scan. But it can still be helpful.
As of right now, Android's Unknown Tracker Alerts are only working for Apple AirTag devices.
However, Google is currently working with other manufacturers including Samsung, Tile, Pebblebee, Chipolo, and eufy Security.
They are working together as part of the joint industry specification and should be able to bring support for these other devices to Android in the near future.
