Vibrant Traditions & Rituals Live On in Malaysia: Celebrating Thaipusam 2025 at Batu Caves

Описание: According to estimates, as many as 1.8 million people celebrated Thaipusam at Batu Caves in Malaysia in 2025. And I was lucky enough to be one of them.

A couple of days earlier, I walked to the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in downtown Kuala Lumpur to witness the departure of the Silver Chariot. This brightly lit chariot containing a beautiful statue of Lord Murugan was beginning its long annual journey to Batu Caves.

And in the crowd watching this event, I happened to meet a local man named Sat. He told me all about Lord Muragan and Thaipusam, and he invited me to join him and his family for the official procession to Batu Caves.

Sat and his brothers would be carrying the traditional kavadi or "burden" to Lord Murugan's temples at Batu Caves. And Sat invited me to their family's temple to witness the preparations and walk with them in their procession. It was a rare opportunity to be personally involved in this significant Hindu festival.
