Quick comparison of RIS with high values of M vs ReSTIR DI on a 19k emissive triangles simple scene.
Even with values as high as 512 light candidates and 8 BSDF candidates + visibility in the target function, RIS struggles to produce a noise-free-ish where ReSTIR does so much more easily and at way higher framerates.
Pairing RIS with a light-tree sampling technique such as stochastic lightcuts (http://www.cemyuksel.com/research/sto...) could actually work very well.
