In this post we are learn about the Umananda bairav temple.

Umananda Temple — often referred to as Umananda Devalaya — is a famous Shiva temple located on Umananda Island (also known as Peacock Island) in the middle of the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, Assam.
If you are referring to “Umananda Bairav Temple”, it is likely the same shrine, as Lord Shiva is worshipped here in the form of Bhayananda (Bhairav).

Location: Peacock Island, Brahmaputra River, Guwahati, Assam

Mythology:
Legends say Shiva created the island to meditate. Another tale states that Kamadeva was burnt to ashes here by Shiva’s third eye—hence the island is also called Bhasmachal.

In the middle of the Brahmaputra River, there is a small hill known as “Mayilmalai” (Peacock Hill) or “Bhasmachala Hill.” This is also called Umananda Island. The Umananda Bhairava Temple is located here.

It is believed that Lord Shiva, separated from Goddess Parvati, immersed Himself in deep meditation at this very spot. Accepting the request of the gods, Manmatha (Kamadeva) came here and attempted to disturb Shiva’s penance. Angered by this, Lord Shiva opened His third eye and reduced Manmatha to ashes.

Manmatha’s wife, Rati, pleaded with Lord Shiva to restore her husband’s life. Accepting her request, Shiva revived Kamadeva. However, Kamadeva’s former beauty had vanished. To regain his lost beauty, following Shiva’s instructions, Kamadeva went to Nilachala Mountain in search of the sacred Yoni Mudra, and worshipped the Goddess there. After many years of penance, Kamadeva finally received the Goddess’s grace and regained his lost beauty.

Later, with the help of Vishwakarma, Kamadeva built a marvelous temple upon the Yoni Mudra. Since Kamadeva regained his beauty and form at this place, that region later came to be known as Kamarupa, according to puranic history.

It is noteworthy that the Umananda Bhairava Temple is the Bhairava shrine associated with the Kamakhya Peetham.

Since this is the place where Kamadeva was reduced to ashes, it came to be called Bhasmachalam. This hill is also known as Bhasmakuta.

The temple can be reached only by boats. This sacred shrine is located approximately 8 kilometers from the Kamakhya Temple.

It is also said that before having darshan of Adi Shakti Mahabhairavi Kamakhya, one must first have darshan of Umananda Bhairava. Visiting the Kamakhya Temple without first seeing Umananda is believed not to grant the complete fruit of darshan.

பிரம்மபுத்திரா நதியின் நடுவில்
"மயில்மலை' அல்லது "பஸ்மாசலமலை' எனப்படும் சிறிய குன்று இருக்கிறது. இது உமானந்தா தீவு என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இங்கு உமானந்த பைரவர் கோவில் அமைந்துள்ளது.

இந்த இடத்தில் தான் தேவியை பிரிந்த சிவபெருமான் ஆழ்ந்த தியானத்தில் மூழ்கியிருந்தார். தேவர்களின் கோரிக்கையை ஏற்று இங்கு வந்த மன்மதன்
சிவபெருமானின் தவத்தை கலைத்ததாகவுகவும், இதனால் கோபம் கொண்ட ஈசன் தனது மூன்றாவது கண்ணால் "காமதகனம்' செய்ததாக சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

உமானந்தா பைரவர் கோவில் காமாக்யா பீடத்திற்கான பைரவரின் கோவில் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தகுந்தது.

படகுகள் மூலமாக மட்டுமே இந்த கோயிலுக்கு செல்ல முடியும். இந்த ஆலயம் காமாக்யா கோவிலிலிருந்து ஏறக்குறைய 8 கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்தில் உள்ளது.

ஆதி-சக்தி மகாபைரவி காமாக்யாவை தரிசிப்பதற்கு முன்பு, உமானந்தா பைரவரை தரிசிக்க வேண்டும் என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. உமானந்தர் கோயிலுக்குச் செல்லாமல் காமாக்யா கோயிலுக்குச் செல்வது முழுமையான தரிசனபலனை தராது என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.
