Roger Allers, co-director of Disney’s The Lion King and the film that made "Hakuna Matata" famous, has died at 76.
He also worked on Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Lilo & Stitch, and co-directed Sony’s Open Season.
Allers helped shape Disney’s animation renaissance, earning an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for The Lion King, and co-wrote its Tony-winning Broadway adaptation. Disney CEO Bob Iger called him “a creative visionary whose contributions will live on for generations.”
Born in New York in 1949 and raised in Arizona, Allers began at Disney on Tron (1982) and later led story work on major films before co-directing The Lion King, the highest-grossing hand-drawn animated film ever.

Roger Allers was an American film director, animator, screenwriter, storyboard artist, and playwright. He was best known for co-directing Disney Animation’s The Lion King (1994), the highest-grossing traditionally animated film at the time, and for writing the Broadway adaptation of the story. He also directed Sony Pictures Animation’s Open Season (2006) and the animated feature The Prophet (2014), and contributed as a storyboard artist or writer on multiple notable animated films including Oliver & Company, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and others.
Born in Rye, New York, and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, Allers earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arizona State University before beginning a career in animation in the late 1970s. His work spanned several decades, with significant involvement in landmark projects of the Disney Renaissance era and beyond.
Allers died at his home in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 76 following a short illness; no further specific cause of death has been publicly confirmed. His body of work remains part of the history of modern animated filmmaking, particularly through The Lion King and its continued presence in film and on stage.
