Series: Pakistan tour of Bangladesh, 2026
Venue: Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Date & Time: Tomorrow, 10:00 AM LOCAL
The cricketing world witnessed a new revitalised Bangladesh earlier this week as they fought tooth and nail before clinching a victory in the first Test at Mirpur. Now, after a disappointing defeat in the series opener, Pakistan will be under immense pressure heading into the second Test at Sylhet on Saturday.
Bangladesh stunned Pakistan by 104 runs in the Mirpur Test, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series and putting the visitors in danger of another overseas series defeat. This is now Bangladesh's third consecutive win against Pakistan and their first victory against the nation at home.
Bangladesh enter the second Test with confidence soaring after producing an outstanding all-round performance in the opener. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto starred with scores of 101 and 87, while the bowling attack, led by pace sensation Nahid Rana, dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup on the final day.
For years, Bangladesh has been known for having a spin-heavy bowling attack. However, at Mirpur, the side showcased their fast-bowling dominance, led by speedster Nahid Rana and well-supported by Taskin Ahmed.
This is a major shift in approach as only a few years ago, there were several home Tests when Bangladesh bowled spin for more than 90% of the total overs. For example, in a 2018 home test against the West Indies, Bangladesh picked four specialist spinners and didn't bowl a single over of seam across 96 overs.
Apart from their fast-bowling approach, Bangladesh also made other bold moves in the first Test, like declaring their second innings on Day 5 and setting a target of 268 runs for the visitors, which was quite achievable given that more than two full sessions were still left.
Coming to the recap of the first Test. Bangladesh batted first and scored a mammoth 413/10 in the first innings (their third-highest total against Pakistan).
Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto led from the front with a ton, while Mominul Haque (91) and Mushfiqur Rahim (71) notched crucial half-centuries. Haque and Shanto stitched a magnificent 170-run stand for the third wicket.
Notably, Pakistani seamer Mohammad Abbas bowled a brilliant spell and took his sixth five-wicket haul. Shaheen Afridi also supported him well by taking three wickets.
In reply, Pakistan also matched fire with fire as they piled 386/10 in 100.3 overs. The side fielded two uncapped players - Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal - and both of them batted as they belonged to this stage. Fazal scored a composed 60 off 120 balls while Awais went on to score a century. He became only the third Pakistani batter after Fawad Alam and Umar Akmal to score a ton on debut in an away Test match.
A half-century each from Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha at the back-end of the innings ensured that the Bangladesh lead was narrowed to just 27 runs.
