Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray criticised the Maharashtra State Election Commissioner on January 15, 2026, demanding transparency on the official's salary and accountability for the nine-year delay in Mumbai civic polls. Thackeray questioned what the Election Commissioner and staff accomplished during the prolonged gap before BMC elections finally commenced across 227 wards. He insisted on action against those responsible for the holdup in these high-stakes municipal elections. After casting his vote with family members Aaditya, Tejas, and Rashmi Thackeray, he urged Mumbaikars to exercise their franchise in the contest against BJP-led Mahayuti, with turnout reaching 17.58% by 11:30 am.
