“Down by the Riverside” is an African-American spiritual dating back to pre-American Civil War years. The Rodeheaver Company first published the song in 1918 in “Plantation Melodies: A Collection of Modern, Popular and Old-time Negro-Songs of the Southland.” The first recording of “Down by the Riverside” was by the Fisk University Jubilee Quartet in 1920, published by Columbia in 1922. Before World War II, there were numerous black gospel recordings of the song, and during the Vietnam War, it was used as an anti-war protest song.
“Down by the Riverside” has a number of alternative titles, including “Ain’t Gonna Study War No More” and “Gonna Lay Down My Burden.” With the metaphor of crossing the River Jordan to enter the Promised Land (from the Old Testament), the song relates to baptism in water. The text of the refrain “ain’t gonna study war no more” is a reference from the Book of Isaiah, “nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” In this rendition, pianist Charles Manning improvises the well-known spiritual “Down by the Riverside.”
