On 3 March 2026, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders Mary Lawlor presented her final report to the UN Human Rights Council during its 61st session, bringing forward the voices of human rights defenders at a time of growing attacks on human rights & the international system meant to protect them.
Called "Defending dignity and claiming rights: human rights defenders hold firm to universal values as others desert them", the report explores what motivates people to exercise their right to promote, protect and defend human rights, despite the risks that they face, and examines the effectiveness and efficiency of the international mechanisms designed to provide support to human rights defenders.
