The Ferrari was among the assets seized by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) amid allegations surrounding the more than R2 billion Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal.

The SIU told the Special Tribunal that keeping the Ferrari in storage was becoming increasingly expensive, with storage costing around R5,000 per month, while the vehicle also required a battery replacement costing more than R100,000. The Ferrari’s insurance was also reportedly costing thousands of rand every month.

Maumela opposed the sale, arguing that he remains the legal owner of the vehicle and disputing the claim that the Ferrari was rapidly depreciating. Despite his opposition, the Ferrari was sold to Ferrari South Africa for R9.5 million, with the proceeds ordered to be placed into an interest-bearing trust account.

But the big question remains: when will Morgan Maumela actually face criminal consequences?

The Tembisa Hospital scandal has been linked to allegations of massive corruption and tender fraud, while whistleblower Babita Deokaran, who helped expose corruption involving the hospital, was murdered in 2021.

Morgan Maumela’s name also came up again at the Madlanga Commission, raising further questions about whether he could eventually be called to testify.
