General Safety and Preparation

Ladders & Access: Always use a properly secured and stable ladder (or loft access steps) to enter and exit the loft. Ensure the ladder is rated for your weight plus the weight of the materials/tools you are carrying.

Lighting: Ensure the loft is well-lit before you begin. Use a high-quality torch or temporary light fitting—do not rely on daylight through the hatch.

PPE: Always wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

Dust Mask/Respirator: Especially when handling insulation or if the loft is dusty.

Safety Goggles/Glasses: To protect against falling dust and debris.

Gloves: To protect hands from rough timbers and insulation fibres.

Knee Pads: Essential when kneeling for extended periods on joists or boards.

Tool Check: Always ensure your tools and equipment are in good working order before starting. Read all instructions carefully, especially if you are using a new piece of equipment.

Working in the Loft:

Never Step Off the Joists: CRITICAL! Only stand or kneel on existing secure boards or the structural joists. Do not stand between the joists, as the ceiling below is not designed to bear weight.

Damp Check: Do not install any new boards or storage if you find any sign of damp, mould, or leaks in your loft. Address the underlying moisture issue first.

Electrical Hazards: When positioning your raised flooring, do not lay insulation or boards directly on top of electrical cables. Run cables through or around the leg system, leaving an air gap, or re-route them if necessary, ideally with the help of a qualified electrician.

Load Limits: Do not overload the loft leg panels or the flooring. Check the maximum weight your chosen loft leg system and, more importantly, your home's ceiling structure is rated to hold. Storage should be for light, evenly distributed loads only. If in doubt, consult a structural engineer.

Ventilation: Ensure you do not block or cover any existing air vents, eaves, or airflow channels, as this is vital for preventing condensation and dampness.
