Beauty was about 40kg when she first came to me and is now a much healthier 22kg. Because of her weight and because she laid on the hard ground often she developed callouses on her elbows. These are pretty harmless usually, but sometimes they can get small sores that become infected. Dogs can also get them when they're older as they lay on tile or concrete throughout their life.
When this happens I use a little Tamodine on a cotton pad to clean her callous off and usually they clear up within the week. If they don't you should arrange to visit a vet.
Callouses don't ever really recover or disappear and are only an issue when they get sore or get cut. You can't put creams or salves on them because if you soften them up they're just going to get sore again. There is no hair left to protect the skin so they're best left alone as long as they aren't splitting or causing pain to your pup.
If you have any questions leave them in the comments below and I will do my best to help!
