While much of the political energy in Tokyo revolved around the effort to push the fiscal 2026 budget through the National Diet of Japan this week, the administration initiated work on some longer-term priorities, including the launch of an expert panel to examine the implications of foreign ownership of land, and preparation of a review of Japan’s major national security documents, the latter suggesting that the country may soon revisit the strategic framework that guides its defense policy.
While the short-term parliamentary movements ensure that the budget passes in time, they are paired with gradual preparation for structural policy shifts in the longer term. This brings the question: what do these early moves reveal about the strategic direction of Japan’s government in the years ahead?
