Castle Doors is a classic ZX80 type‑in adventure written by Weldon Horton and published in the January 1981 issue of SYNC magazine. It’s very much a product of that early home‑computer era: a lightweight, Dungeons‑and‑Dragons‑inspired dungeon crawl built entirely from BASIC and imagination. Each door hides a random encounter, and the player chooses whether to fight, bribe, or flee as they build up enough strength to challenge the evil Wizard. For a 1K‑friendly program, it captures the feel of a tabletop encounter table surprisingly well, and it’s a lovely snapshot of how early hobbyists translated fantasy role‑playing into code.
That said, the game is on the gentler side — once you understand how strength wagering works, it’s not too hard to outpace the monsters and reach the Wizard in good shape. The original listing even encourages players to customise it, and because it’s written in straightforward ZX80 BASIC, the difficulty can be adjusted with just a few value tweaks. Monster strength ranges, bribe behaviour, penalties for running, and even the Wizard’s stats are all exposed in the code, making it easy to toughen the game up or rebalance it for a more challenging crawl.
