Most cyclists talk about FTP.
Very few understand what it actually represents.
In this presentation, we break down Critical Power (CP) - what it is, how it’s calculated, and why it matters far more than simply chasing a 60-minute test number.
Critical Power represents the boundary between stable and unstable physiology - the line between sustainable and unsustainable intensity. Below it, your physiology remains relatively stable and repeatable. Above it, fatigue accelerates and anaerobic contribution increases dramatically.
We cover:
What Critical Power actually measures
How it relates to FTP (and where they overlap)
Why CP is the asymptote of the power-duration curve
What W′ (W prime) represents and why it matters
How Dr. Phil Skiba’s linear regression method allows us to calculate CP
Why converting wattage to total work (kJ) makes the relationship linear
How CP and W′ are derived from that linear regression
How CP allows us to build physiologically precise training zones
Where LT1 and fiber-type transitions sit relative to Critical Power
Understanding Critical Power changes how training is prescribed. It moves the conversation away from arbitrary zones and toward a model grounded in how physiology actually behaves under stress.
Once you know your CP, training becomes more precise.
And precision compounds.

This is how we define intensity at QT2 - not by labels, but by physiology.
