The vessels — Stellar Ruby, Asphalt Star and Al Jafzia — were intercepted about 100 nautical miles off the Mumbai coast after suspicious movements were detected. Authorities escorted the ships to Mumbai, where they are now under investigation.

According to reports, the ships were attempting to conceal the origin of their oil cargo through mid-sea transfers, a method commonly used to bypass international sanctions.

Shipping data has linked at least two of the vessels directly to Iranian oil transport. Al Jafzia reportedly carried Iranian fuel oil to Djibouti, while Stellar Ruby was flagged in Iran.

The ships are also believed to have changed identities frequently to avoid detection, using tactics such as falsified documentation and complex ownership structures.

India has since intensified maritime surveillance, deploying 55 Coast Guard ships and multiple aircraft to monitor its exclusive economic zone.

The seizure comes amid strengthening India-US cooperation and global efforts to curb illicit oil trade involving sanctioned Iranian vessels.
