The Six-Day War stands out as one of the shortest but most consequential wars in history; it lasted only six days, but permanently changed the balance of power in the Middle East.
The conflict between Israel and its neighboring nations of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria posed one of the biggest challenges to Israel’s geopolitical position, but ended victorious for the Jewish State.
The troop build-ups, blockades, and signing of defence agreements between neighboring enemy states, signalled to Israel that a military confrontation was imminent. Israel launched a pre-emptive strike.
Intense military preparation and an effective air force gave Israel a tactical advantage, destroying the Egyptian, Jordanian, and Syrian air forces during the first day of combat. Between June 5th and 11th, 700 Jews and 11,000 Egyptians, 6,000 Jordanians and 1,000 Syrians lost their lives. A ceasefire was signed on June 11th 1967.
Israel nearly tripled its territory in a week, gaining the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza, Golan Heights and the West Bank. Despite Israel’s celebrations of such an achievement, the aftermath of the war spurred global debate and controversy over the captured territories.
Since the Six Day War, numerous politicians in the international arena have invoked statutes like the Fourth Geneva Convention to characterize Israel's engagement in the disputed territories as an “occupation.” However, Israeli control over these disputed areas was obtained in a war of self-defence.
The West Bank, for example, was formerly controlled by Jordan, and since Jordan renounced sovereignty over this territory after the war, it should be considered disputed and not occupied. Israel views its continued military presence in the land gained, as a necessary defense against the threats of terrorism and war, which have been present since the establishment of the State.
Unveiling hidden injustices and promoting human rights is our driving force and main passion.
