It takes a special type of geek to see the potential of a 50's film projector to be a guitar amp - or to turn it into one. Such was the attraction of the Bell and Howell 385 Filmosound projector. It had all the right bits in all the right places and with a little tenacity and manipulation it became one of the groovier electric guitar tone discoveries of the last century. Walrus Audio have honoured this machine and those who forwarded 'the knowledge' by issuing their own version: 385 Overdrive. Walrus Audio have taken the single tone and volume found on the original machine and turned them into a foursome of familiar controls: Bass, Treble, Gain and Volume. The drive sound is reminiscent of old tweed amps thanks to the (original's) 6V6 tube basis but to my ears and guitars, it has a better dynamic, at least until you crank the gain and the quite excellent distortion and compression kicks in. Then it becomes a solo machine.

Have a listen, let me know what you think. I think it's different, useful and toneful enough to be included in any drive menagerie. If it inspires you to play more, it's a definite.
