(25 Apr 2020) The month of Ramadan has begun across Bosnia amid drastic lockdown measures preventing worshippers from attending mosques and other religious events.
But not every Ramadan custom has fallen victim to the virus.
Bosnian Muslims queued outside traditional Sarajevo bakeries to buy somun bread, something typically eaten to break the daily Ramadan fast.
Another tradition that has survived the lockdown is cannon fire at sunset, a signal for the people of Sarajevo that the fast is over and they can begin 'iftar' celebration dinners.
Firing the cannon has been the job of the Krivic family for hundreds of years.
The man currently in charge, Smail Krivic, said he hoped restrictions would be eased later in the Ramadan month to allow worshippers to return to their mosques.
Bosnia has been in lockdown since 15 March.
It has reported more than 1,400 COVID-19 cases and 55 deaths.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
