Malcolm X -- What Makes This Movie Great? (Episode 44)

Описание: From Spike Lee, it's the 3-hour-plus biopic of the African-American activist of the 1950s and 1960s, "Malcolm X," starring Denzel Washington and Angela Bassett. This video reviews and analyzes a still relevant biographical movie about the adult life of Malcolm X. I analyze the film's structure, dividing it into three parts. The video shows examples from each of the three parts. Curiously, the structure fits into the philosopher Soren Kierkegaard's division of three stages of life: the Aesthetic, the Ethical, and the Religious. The video also argues that the movie is as much as contemporary commentary, an artful essay, as it is a biographical movie.

Note: this video was released on May 28, 2020, just after two American national news events involving black men dying by seemingly unjust means, subsequent riots in several cities, and public outrage similar to what "Malcolm X" was responding to in 1992. The release of this video on this day is total coincidence. I made the video in early May 2020 and scheduled it for release several weeks in advance, when nothing related to the topic of race in America was obviously in focus. This video therefore has no agenda, in terms of its contents or its release date.
