New Asheville Motor Speedway once hosted NASCAR legends, roaring crowds, and unforgettable moments — before it was abruptly killed by an Asheville landmark.
Locally known as “The River,” this forgotten speedway was later transformed into a velodrome, leaving only traces of its racing past hidden in plain sight.
In this video, I walk the grounds of New Asheville Motor Speedway alongside former drivers Nick Ogle, Kerry Bodenhamer, and Danny Lunsford, who share their firsthand memories, stories, and perspectives from a track that time tried to erase.
I also make a brief pit stop at Celebrity’s Hot Dogs, owned by former NASCAR driver Robert Pressley, where racing history still lives on in a different way.
From legendary drivers and fierce local competition to fires, flooding and a sudden demise disappearance — this is the story of a speedway that refused to be completely forgotten.
If you love racing history, lost tracks, and the stories hiding beneath modern landscapes, this one is for you.
