Sculptor Cameron Patricia Downey’s work "The Rocks Cry Out," inspired by the Peabody’s collections, brings together rocks and found objects to trouble the line between the animate and inanimate. The work asks whether these materials’ rich histories, touched by the actions of people or the Earth, imbue them with a kind of life.
Downey looks at objects in a complex way, imagining where they’ve been, what they might have experienced, and who might have used – and loved – a particular thing. “Minerals and rocks keep and witness the earth itself and manifest its changes. They are not purported or understood as living, yet they boast a beautiful life,” said Downey, who is an MFA candidate at the Yale School of Art.
"The Rocks Cry Out" is currently on display near the museum’s North entrance and was created as part of the Peabody’s Summer Art Fellowship.
Downey is an anti-disciplinary artist whose work oscillates between photography, film, body, sculpture, curation and otherwise. The incidental, the precarious and the misremembered are central to these works which strive to archive, unfurl, make-altar-of and bring fantasy to the Blues of Black life and relation.
