A new chapter or story usually starts on a new page. When formatting a book, a common error is hitting the Enter key multiple times, as many times as is required to go to a new page. The problem with this strategy is if you modify your document by adding a word, sentence, a paragraph or paragraphs, it messes with the formatting. Luckily, Word has a feature called page breaks.
A page break is used to control where a page ends and where a new page begins. It formats documents of all sizes, so if you resize a document from letter size to 5 x 8” the page break works.
In MS Word there is a feature called a section break, which does more than introduce a page break. It allows you to create multiple sections in one document which is handy because sometimes you want to format different chapters differently, for example the headers, footers, borders.
As you format your document into sections/chapters here are a couple things you should consider:
Here are ten considerations to keep in mind:
Consistency: Maintain consistent formatting throughout your manuscript. Use the same font, font size, line spacing, and margins for all chapters.
Heading Styles: Utilize Word's built-in heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) for chapter titles and subheadings. This not only helps in maintaining consistency but also aids in generating a table of contents later on.
Section Breaks: Insert section breaks at the end of each chapter to ensure chapters begin on a new page. By using section breaks you can eventually format different sections differently: handy for novels where you want different chapter headers and footers.
Margins and Alignment: Ensure your text is aligned consistently. Left-align text and maintain even margins on all sides for a professional appearance.
Chapter Title Formatting: Make chapter titles stand out by formatting them differently from regular text. You might consider using a larger font size, bolding, or italicizing chapter titles.
Indentation: Use consistent indentation for paragraphs throughout your manuscript. Typically, the first line of each paragraph is indented. Ensure it's consistent across all chapters.
Header/Footer: Include headers or footers with page numbers and book title/author name. These elements should be consistent across all chapters.
Review Formatting: Once you've formatted your chapters, take the time to review them thoroughly. Check for any inconsistencies, spacing issues, or formatting errors. It's also a good idea to preview how your manuscript will look when printed or converted to different formats for example a PDF or eBook.
