Play the Game Tonight was written by Kerry Livgren, Rich Williams, Phil Ehart, Danny Flower and Rob Frazier and was the opening track and lead single on Vinyl Confessions, Kansas' eighth studio album released in May 1982. Play the Game Tonight was the third of four Top 20 hits produced by Kansas, peaking at 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The album peaked at number 16 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Vinyl Confessions was a major turning point for Kansas, with the departure of lead singer Steve Walsh, who did not agree with the direction of the band.
