The Polihali Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has successfully completed its reverse entry into the 1.484 km TBM access adit and is now positioned facing west towards Katse, where it will begin its main excavation drive in the first quarter of 2026.
The team is currently assembling the TBM backup systems and the conveyor belt that will transport excavated material.
This week, Mr. Koli Lekhotla, Assistant Resident Engineer at Metsi a Senqu Khubelu Consultants Joint Venture, breaks down how the TBM will excavate and install tunnel lining segments, and explains how the tunnel intakes interconnect with the TBM’s main drive within the overall water delivery system.
