An adolescent bull elephant went on a rampage in Buriram, Thailand, after his mating session was hurried, injuring his mahout and smashing property before being sedated and taken into care. The incident has renewed attention on how captive elephants are used for breeding and tourism.

A 19‑year‑old bull, Phlai Petch Uthai, was brought to mate and became enraged when his mahout tried to separate the pair, leaving the caretaker with a serious lung injury. Witnesses reported the elephant charging through the area, overturning a white car, chasing a motorcyclist, and trampling five road signs as residents fled. Volunteers from Elephant Kingdom Hospital intervened; a tranquilliser took about two hours to take effect before the bull was secured. The mahout remains in hospital, car owners are awaiting insurance decisions, and the elephant is now under veterinary care in Surin. Local officials said attempts to hurry the breeding may have triggered possessive aggression, adding to growing concern over the welfare of captive elephants used in breeding programs and tourism.
