How to Determine Grammatical Gender in Czech (Czech Gender: Episode 2 of 3)

Описание: When you see a noun in Czech, how do you determine its grammatical gender? Can you tell whether it's masculine, feminine, or neuter? Yes! In the majority of cases, you can guess the gender just by looking at the noun's ending.

THERE ARE A FEW RULES:
👉 When the word ends in a consonant, it is:
77% masculine
20% feminine
(often soft consonants ž, š, č, ř, ď, ť, ň + c, j / ending -OST)
3% neuter

👉 When the word ends in -A:
92% feminine
7% masculine (surnames, professions)
1% neuter (words coming from other languages)

👉 When the word ends in -O:
99% neuter

👉 When the word ends in -E/Ě:
89% feminine (endings -ICE, -YNĚ, -IE)
8% neuter (ending -IŠTĚ)
3% masculine (surname, profession)

👉 When the word ends in -Í:
99% neuter
1% masculine/feminine (person)

WHAT IS GRAMMATICAL GENDER IN CZECH?

👉 it's a way of categorizing nouns
👉 there are three genders in Czech: masculine, feminine, and neuter
👉 the masculine gender is further divided into masculine animate (for people and animals) and masculine inanimate (for objects or abstract words)
👉 we need to learn the gender of all nouns because it influences the form of other words in the sentence
👉 when talking about people, you can follow their natural gender to determine their grammatical gender
👉 with other nouns, you need to memorize the gender
👉 often, gender can be determined by looking at the noun's ending
