In August 2022, Tayvin Galanakis, a 19-year-old freshman football player at William Penn University, was pulled over by police in Newton, Iowa, late at night. The initial reason for the traffic stop was minor — officers claimed he was driving with his high beams on.
During the stop, officers began suspecting Galanakis of driving under the influence, despite him repeatedly stating that he had not consumed alcohol or drugs. He cooperated fully with police, agreeing to perform field sobriety tests and submitting to a breathalyzer. The breath test showed a 0.00 blood alcohol concentration, meaning no alcohol was detected in his system.
Even after passing the sobriety tests and blowing zero, officers continued treating Galanakis as if he were impaired. Body-camera footage captures his visible confusion and frustration as he insists that the results prove he is sober. Despite the lack of evidence, officers arrested him for suspected DUI and transported him to jail.
Later that night, additional testing confirmed that Galanakis had no alcohol or drugs in his system. He was released, and the DUI charge was ultimately dismissed. Believing his arrest was unjustified, Galanakis later obtained and shared the police body-cam footage on social media. The video quickly went viral, sparking widespread public outrage and debate over police conduct and civil rights.
